Fort Provintia

(赤崁樓)

To develop their colony in Formosa, the Dutch colonist employed labors in large number from mainland China to migrate to Taiwan (it is from this era that the Chinese started to populate the island). But in 1652, because of the  inequality and mistreatment to the Chinese labor, a rebellion broke out in Provintia Street. After the rebellion was put down, the Dutch decided to strengthen their defense in Provintia Street, and Fort Provintia was built in 1653. This fort fell to Koxinga as well in 1662, and was abandoned and destroyed by an earthquake in the 19th century. After that, several Chinese monuments, like the Temple to the Sea God, the Wenchang Temple and Penghu Academy was built on the remains. In 1921 the Japanese rediscovered the remains of Fort Provintia while demolishing one of the Chinese monuments built upon it, and rebuilt it as a history museum. After WWII it became the Tainan City History Museum, and was renovated again in 1974 to became the monument it is today.

The streets near Fort Provintia is also one of the best place to find local Taiwanese food in Tainan.

Koxinga Shrine

(延平郡王祠)

Zheng Chenggong, also know as Koxinga. was a Ming loyalist and general in the dynasty last years. His father was a famous Chinese merchant / pirate that controls the commerce on the East Asia trade-routes. After joining the Ming navy and inheriting his father's fleet of over 800 ships, Koxinga fought in the struggle against the Manchurian Qin's conquest in China. Eventually the Ming force was defeated in several important battle and on the edge of a final defeat. Being an island close to China and a Chinese population resentful of their Dutch masters, Taiwan was a perfect base for Koxinga's plan of Chinese reconquista. So in 1661 he invaded Dutch Formosa and took the island in 1662, thus the first Chinese regime in Taiwan was established. Koxinga was praised by all the regime that ruled Taiwan since then, his loyalty to Ming was admired by the Qin officals and a shrine was erected as his memorial. His mother was Japanese, so the Japanese colonist see him as a pioneer of Japanese rule in Taiwan and convert his shrine into a jinjya, and the Chinese regime that took the island after WWII connects to his idea of Chinese reconquista.
